Picture
My name is Marie-Helene Marsolais. I am originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and I have been living in Perth, Australia since 2009. I am fluent in both French and English. I'm a Qualified and ACA-Registered Counsellor. I founded MHM Counselling to offer counselling services dedicated to grey area drinkers. I'm also a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and founded Mental Health for All - a training consultancy business offering MHFA courses around Perth and WA. I provide mental health first aid training to organisations and workplaces in Perth. Alongside my professional qualifications, I also have my own lived experiences and personal journey with alcohol.

My passion: Alcohol Addiction

I have a deep passion for all aspects related to alcohol addiction, therapies, and modalities that aid in addiction recovery. I am fascinated by the intricate workings of the brain, body, and mind and how they contribute to addiction. From cognitive-behavioral therapies to motivational interviewing, mindfulness practices, and holistic approaches, I am continuously seeking to expand my understanding of these modalities and their effectiveness in supporting recovery. Moreover, I am intrigued by the underlying neurobiology of addiction and how substances like alcohol affect the brain.

My passion for this subject extends to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental health and well-being. I believe that education and understanding are key in supporting individuals who struggle with alcohol addiction and fostering a more compassionate and informed society.

By combining my passion, knowledge, and dedication, I strive to contribute to the field of alcohol addiction and recovery and make a positive impact in the lives of individuals seeking support and healing.

My lived experience with alcohol

In the past, I was what you might call a "party girl," enjoying my fair share of happy hours then using wine to cope with the stresses of professional life and to celebrate with friends. As time went on, I became a mother and found myself relying on alcohol as a source of comfort and reward after exhausting days with a toddler. Gradually, I realised that my drinking had shifted from a celebratory activity to a coping mechanism for dealing with various life challenges.

After numerous pauses, attempts to moderate, and countless mornings waking up restless, anxious, and ashamed, I finally made the decision to break up with alcohol. It was such a transformative experience that I felt compelled to help others who may find themselves stuck in similar situations for far too long. I know my journey is mine and for me sobriety was the path to follow. I know that for some, quitting drinking will not be the end-goal. I just want to acknowledge that every story is different, each individual has a specific goal.

But I think that honesty is important here. This is why I share a little bit of my story with you. I wish I could have found years ago a service similar to what I'm offering today: a safe place where I can freely talk without being judged, with empathy and warmth, and support when slowly reaching my goals. A place where I could have learnt about myself, explore further about some unresolved issues and negative thoughts and feelings.
